Ragusa is known as the Town of Bridges because of the 3 constructions that link the two highlands on which it is settled. Some artists and literates have defined it the “Island in Island” or the “Other Sicily” thanks to the history and the socio-economic contest that distinguish it from the rest of the Island.
The devastating earthquake of 1693 destroyed the town almost completely. In XVIII century, Ragusa was rebuilt on two different areas: Ragusa Superiore, settled on the highland and Ragusa Ibla on the medieval plan of the ruined town.
The architectural masterpieces built in that period in Ragusa and in the other sites damaged by the earthquakes compose the Val di Noto: one of the largest areas protected by UNESCO.
The Territory
The Province of Ragusa is constituted by a coastal part and a inner one. Inward, the land comprehended between the highland of Ragusa and the left side of Dirillo River is flat, while near the southern side of Monti Iblei it is characterised by limestone plateaus crossed by deep valleys called Cave or Calanchi where, during the winter, sudden rivers flow.
The limestone plateaus, the Caves, Irminio and its tributaries riverbeds represent a natural landscape of extraordinary value and beauty.
